Heads Up About The Ventline
Desert Waters is opening up their new office in
Florence in July at 431 E. Main Street. The Corrections Ventline™ is open now
and has already received calls.
I want to let you know, if you call, that at the end of your talk the
Responder on duty will ask you to evaluate your distress level at the
beginning of your call and again when you are through. Being an old
hard-headed screw, at first I didn’t think this was pertinent to helping
people. I have come to realize though that this rating is important not only
for the people who run Desert Waters, but also for the Responders. And this
rating will help you judge if the Ventline service is helping you. It may also
perhaps give you a clearer picture of your emotions before and after your talk
with the Ventline Responder.
Please keep in mind that it is important for the Ventline Responders to know
if they are helping you. They are doing this all voluntarily and they do care.
We can only be happy that after all these years people are realizing we need
help too. I have seen the Responders in training and know that some had worked
a full shift somewhere and then came to training for three hours, sometimes
driving from as far as Colorado Springs. They are new at this, so, when you
call, please be patient with them. They are there to help you, not to judge
you or snitch on you. It seems funny to say, but there are outside people
that do care about our families and us.
Give these people a chance, call and say "Hi!" (No names.) Even while I was
helping them with some of their training (doing mock calls with them), I
realized that after all these years I still had some things bugging me. It
helped me just to talk to someone. Talking is free; and the relief is
sometimes worth a lot. It is a blessing to have someone one can trust to talk
to about their deepest thoughts and not think they will be laughed at or that
the word will get out.
