For Officer Wayne Morgan
Today (August 9, 2005) we lost a family member.
Oh, not one that we ever met or ever heard of this far away, but one who was a
fellow Officer. I hope that staff at all levels will be there for his family
and loved ones. I know that when the pipes are played or taps is blown there
will be many a tear. When we say goodbye to family it is the one time a man
can and will cry and not care what anyone thinks. I guess we hope a tear will
be shed for us as well when it?s our time to go.
I have been at several family funerals. I know that there is no easy way to
say goodbye. Officer Morgan was doing a job that he thought was important and
had to be done. Does that make his murder any easier to take? No. We all know
when we put the uniform on that things like this can happen. We try to joke
about it around our friends and families, but the thought is always there. I
want the world to know that this was a real person, someone loved and honored
by his peers, family members and friends. He was one of us, one that you would
have been proud to have known.
In Corrections, those of us who are left start all over again the next day.
Will his friends or family or those of us that were at his last roll call
forget him? The answer is no, just as so many that have gone before him will
not be forgotten. May he be in peace and may his family find comfort in the
days to come. He had some very fine people waiting to welcome him home.
Take care,
The Old Screw
