Courage
Of all the things that
happened down south, all the pain and sorrow, one thing sticks out in my
mind—a TV shot of a Detention Officer standing on a section of highway. There
may have been other Officers around, but he was the only one I saw. He was
standing with a shotgun, the flood at his back and over 50 inmates in front of
him. I knew that he probably had a family and was worried about them, but he
was standing there doing his job. It took outstanding courage for the
Detention Officers and Law Enforcement Officers and Firemen to remain on their
posts. Only after the worse was over did they relieve each other to go check
on their families and homes.
May the powers that be watch over them and their families. They set the
example for what we all do—our jobs. In the coming days these Officers will
live through hell-on-earth trying to get their areas back together, people
safe, and, worst of all, finding and taking care of bodies. If you have time,
take a few minutes and think of them. They will need our prayers and thoughts,
our help, and all our good wishes. A lot of these Officers lost everything
and, like so many others, will have to start over.
As it happens at times in Corrections, a few could not handle the stress.
Don’t criticize them until you have put yourself in their place and thought it
over. Having to pass up the dead while trying to save the living was like
nothing we’ve ever seen before. This was worse than any prison riot we’ve ever
seen or been in.
Take Care,
The Old Screw
